Brooklyn Nets: The
Face of the Future
Brooklyn New York –
The Brooklyn Nets made a block buster move earlier tonight when they shipped
All Star center Tim Duncan to the Houston Astros in a huge deal that netted the
Nets, no pun intended, several pieces that could play big roles in the future including
two first round draft picks. Fans of Brooklyn were left stunned wondering why
would a team bound for the playoffs trade one of the biggest reasons they were
lined up to get into them. The answer is simple. Duncan wasn’t going to return
at the end of the season and the Nets refused to allow money and greed from one
player ruin their chances at playoffs year in and year out.
Paul Millsap and Joe Johnson
were the two big pieces to the trade that sent Tim Duncan to the Rockets and
the general manager of the Nets, Travis McNair, couldn’t be happier with the acquirement
of these players. He used the fact that Paul Millsap might not be Tim Duncan,
but he is more than capable of helping push them to contention for more than
just one season, Joe Johnson is also seen as someone who will help push Brandon
Roy and Marshoon Brooks who both have been struggling all season.
“We are going to
miss Tim, but frustrations when it came to money confused us and he constantly
put down the shape of the team when it came to negotiations of a new deal.”
Just one quote taken from McNair on the discussions of extension attempts with
Tim Duncan. “We like it was the right thing to do to deal him before he became
a distraction in the clubhouse especially once he desired his interest in
testing the free agent market.”
The Nets also felt that it was
the right move because though Duncan was the All Star and was helping the team
win games that he wanted to be the face of the team however the team has been
very open that the face of the Brooklyn Nets is a combination of both once
again center, Brook Lopez, and point guard, Deron Williams. Together the Nets
believe they can bring the team to new heights, and even the NBA Finals.
One reason the Nets are glad to
have them as the faces is the fact one is in the front court and in the back
court. With the young team they felt it was the right thing to do to have a
leader on both ends of the court to make sure the younger players can keep
focus when they are on the court. The Nets will also rely on players like Paul
Millsap to help teach the young guns as they try to make sure they are set to
contend in the present as well as in the long run in the future.
Another big addition to this
trade is the fact Joe Johnson is expiring which can open a lot of doors for the
Nets come the offseason. Some general managers and executives saw the twenty
one million coming off the books as a good thing for the Nets as it’d leave
them with a lot of flexibility come Free Agency. The Nets however instead made
this trade to make sure they had enough pieces to contend next year in case
someone incase Free Agency runs sour. However the team still has enough room
financially to make some moves in Free Agency, and they could even resign
Johnson to a new deal.
It’s safe to say the future of
the Nets is looking bright, but if you ask them the future is shining just as
bright with stars like Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, and Paul Millsap leading the
team. It’ll be interesting to see where they go from here, but all signs are
pointing up.
