Phoenix Suns Remake Roster in Just Under a Week
The Phoenix Suns decided to go in a different direction this offseason when they hired a new general manager to run their team (sunsgm). Due to the retirement of Steve Nash and most of the Suns players being free agents Sunsgm was given the keys to what can only be described as a shell of a team.
Childress Released in Salary Cap Move
But little did Suns fans know that in a little under a weekthe suns would have traded every single one of the players sunsgm inherited whenhe took the team. The first step was taken when in what was described as a “difficult decision” the suns decided to amnesty cut Josh Childress.

Robin Lopez will be reunited with his brother in New Jersey
Suns Acquire Nelson From Cap Strapped Magic
Mere hours later sunsgm pulled off another trade this time sending young pf Markief Morris and a 2014 2nd rounder to Orlandofor Jameer Nelson and Ryan Anderson. This deal gave the Suns some sorely needed pg help that they had been lacking since steve nash retired.
The suns were able to take advantage of the Magic needing to trim payroll in acquiring Jameer Nelson
The suns were able to get through the rest of the day without making any more moves, but sunsgm was working the phones to try and sign two of the top remaining free agents.
Suns and Wolves Swap Starting Centers
The next day the suns opened the day by completing a trade with Minnesota that sent starting center Marcin Gortat as well as rookie shooting guard Jae Crowder and the Nets 2013 1st to the wolves for center Nikola Pekovic, point guard Ramon Sessions, and the Heat 2014 1st rounder. Sunsgm was quoted as saying “I really like pekovic as a role player and starter on this team, but I think the key to the deal was sessions he is a great backup pg”

Suns Finally Get Their Star Ink Allstar Shooting Guard Joe Johnson to 2 year deal
Later in the day news leaked that the suns had agreed to a 2 year 21million dollar contract with a club option for a 3rd year that could bring the deal to 33million with star shooting guard Joe Johnson. This was an important move for the suns as he gave instant credibility to a club that had no real star power.
Convincing Johnson to sign with the Suns gave the organization a selling point to more free agents
Suns Take a Chance on Potential of Randolph
Bolstered by getting Johnson to sign on the dotted line the Suns were able to convince young talented big man Anthony Randolph to sign a 3 year 33million dollar deal with a team option for a 4th year that would push the deal to 46million. Sunsgm said at the press conference “we see Anthony as a big part of our offense and think he will be a great player for years to come.”
Suns Strike Again In Free Agency Sign Brandon Roy to 1 year deal
The next day the suns engaged in serious conversations with Brandon Roy about coming to phoenix to start alongside Joe Johnson. The suns were able to use up the rest of their cap space and ink Roy to a 1 year 8 million dollar deal with a club option for a 2nd at 7.5million. Sunsgm said “I am excited to take a flyer on Brandon his ratings are better than his stats suggest and we hope playing alongside Joe will lead him to fulfill his potential.” However, Roy would never get that chance as the next few days were quiet for the Suns until a string of blockbusters changed the direction of the franchise completely.
Suns Hawks And Magic Agree To Swap For Allstar Smith
The first domino fell when he suns reached an agreement on a 3 team deal with the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic that saw the suns ship out top 5 pick Dion Waiters, point guard Sebastian Telfair, point guard Terrence Williams, and their own 2013 1st rounder to the Hawks, as well as power forward Hakim Warrick, and power forward Ryan Anderson to the Magic. In return the Suns acquired perennial allstar Josh Smith from the Hawks as well as rookie center Keith Benson, and small forward Earl Clark from the Magic. Sunsgm was ecstatic and in the news conference introducing Smith he said “I am taking a big risk trading for Josh not knowing if he will resign, but once he plays for us and he realizes that we are willing to do what is necessary to get him to resign and build the team around him I have faith that he will sign here long term.”

The Suns were looking complete as they had a new roster and a new star player but a few days later the cash strapped Lakers came calling looking to deal one of the best players on the market. The Suns were aggressive and although they did not want to part with their prized free agent signing Anthony Randolph they shipped the newly signed Randolph to the Lakers in a 3 team deal that also saw veteran big man Jeff Foster head to Los Angeles and the newly signed Brandon Roy head to the Hawks. In return the Suns were able to net perennial allstar Al Jefferson as well as shooting guard Dahntay Jones, power forward Perry Jones, and the Hawks 2013 2nd and Magic 2014 2nd. When asked for comment the Suns gm said “I think that a core of Joe Johnson Josh Smith and Al Jefferson can go places. I hope I can convince them to stay but we will put a pretty good lineup on the floor so I have faith.”

Power Forward Anthony Randolph will be taking his talents to the Lakers
Shooting Guard Brandon Roy will try and stay healthy and live up to his potential for the Atlanta Hawks
Suns Sign Tyrus Thomas From Italy Hoping to Bolster Playoff Chances
The Suns are looking to be in a lot better shape now than they were just a week ago, and recently Sunsgm was able to entice power forward Tyrus Thomas to come back to America and play in Phoenix for the MLE. All you have to do to see how far the Sunshave come is look at their starting lineups from when Sunsgm got the job and where they are now.
